Robin Gibb, one-third of the Bee Gees, died Sunday after a long battle with cancer, his spokesperson has confirmed via a statement. Gibb was 62 years old.
"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," reads the statement. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Bee Gees co-founder Robin Gibb is undergoing tests in a U.K. hospital for abdominal pain and inflammation of the colon. He was rushed there by ambulance on Thursday after complaining of pain.
Gibb's wife of 25 years, Dwina, is by his side at Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England, and is "desperately worried" about his health, the singer's rep tells PEOPLE.
There is also a Gibb family history of gastrointestinal problems. In 2003, Robin's twin brother Maurice died after suffering intestinal complications.

The Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has never seen hit dance movie Saturday Night Fever - even though the band recorded its beloved soundtrack.
Gibb admits he has never managed to watch the entire film because he gets "restless" - and even walked out of the premiere after just 30 minutes.
